Martial arts for regular people!
At Shinju Dojo, we believe most everyone can learn our martial art of aikido. You do not have to be in shape or of a particular build or body type. We have had people with bad backs, cranky knees, and missing limbs enjoy our class. We've even had students who are 80 years old!
Our lead instructor is a woman and we specialize in understanding women's needs and self defense concerns. There is no intimidation, there are no body builders, and there are no power moves. There are no competitions or tournaments. We personalize the instruction to meet your needs. After more than 23 years of teaching, we are proud to still be injury-free. We are a resource for adults, teens, and families to grow their self confidence and become who they were meant to be. Shinju Dojo becomes a second family to our members. We are informal and encourage questions. We want our members to have fun and love that people always spend the class laughing! Check out our videos page to see what our martial art of aikido looks like. All you need is a smile and a love of learning. Give us a call today! |

What to wear
For your first few classes, you may wear comfortable gym clothes like yoga pants and a T-shirt.
When you decide to sign up, you'll need a white single or double weave judo gi (training outfit). It is better suited to the class activities and will last for years. Shinju Dojo follows a judo lineage and we don't ordinarily wear hakama (formal pleated black trousers). If you don't have a gi, let us know. We will be happy to set you up with one. Please wear a T-shirt under the gi jacket. Women should also wear a comfortable sports bra. No fragrances, gum, or jewelry in the dojo, please. |
"I never imagined what a transformative journey this would be when I joined Shinju Dojo. As from day one, I immediately felt at home; the classes are enjoyable, fun, and run in a very friendly atmosphere. The instructors Heather and Roy are extremely knowledgeable and are amazing human beings. They care about all their students; they are passionate about delivering the best experience and teaching. No matter the age and fitness level, Heather and Roy know how to chunk each technique into moves that are accessible by anyone according to their respective abilities. Aikido is not only a great self-defense art, but it is also practical. It effectively improves posture, improves how we carry ourselves, and also teaches us how to minimize injury and protect ourselves in case of falls. Taking classes at Shinju Dojo is probably one of the best gifts you can give to yourself. Give it a try, their first class is free, and it is month to month contract."
