The History of Shinju Dojo

Heather Beck started the school in February 1999 out of her love for Aikido and teaching.  She began her study of the art in January 1994 and has been dedicated ever since.  She received her Shodan (first degree black belt) in November of 1995, her Nidan (second degree black belt) in June of 1997, her Sandan (third degree black belt) in March of 2000, and her Yondan (fourth degree black belt) in June of 2001.  She previously had studied Tae Kwon Do, but soon discovered her heart belonged to Aikido.  Between the beautiful grace and inherently effective self-defense qualities, she has found Aikido to be the martial art which works best for her and her students.

The Karl Geis Organization provides the optimum atmosphere in which to learn as it is filled with patient, loving, people who often refer to themselves as family.  It is this atmosphere which inspires instructors to celebrate each new person who walks in the door.

"As teachers (of any rank, yellow belt to Shihan) we find ourselves learning just as much from the lower ranked people as we do from the higher ranks.  It is the white belt who asks us why something is done a particular way and notices every detail of every move, right or wrong, and gets us thinking about everything we do and why it works (or doesn't)."

As a means to further her understanding of the arts of Aikido, Judo, and Jodo, Heather frequently visits other dojos in the organization and invites her students to travel with her.
